                              Reviews/Synopsis
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meticulously crafted but also ponderous and predictable, James Cameron's 1989 deep-sea close-encounter epic reaffirms one of the oldest first principles of cinema: everything moves a lot more slowly underwater. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as formerly married petroleum engineers who still have some "issues" to work out, are drafted to assist a gung-ho Navy SEAL (Michael Biehn) with a top-secret recovery operation: a nuclear sub has been ambushed and sunk, under mysterious circumstances, in some of the deepest waters on earth, and the petro-techies have the only submersible craft capable of diving down that far. Every image and every performance is painstakingly sharp and detailed (and the computerized water creatures are lovely) but the movie's lumbering pace is ultimately lethal. It's the audience that ends up feeling waterlogged. For a guy who likes guns as much as Cameron (his next film after all, was the body-count masterpiece Terminator 2: Judgment Day), it's interesting that the moral balance here is weighted heavily in favor of the can-do engineers; the military types are end-justifies-the-means amoralists, just like the weasely government bureaucrats in Aliens.[/color]

This is the only true widescreen anamorphic version of The Abyss ever to be released, literally all other region versions have been cropped 4.3 with black bars and due to this have very low resolution, also other region versions have had parts of the movie cut- which adds another 28 mins to the film.
This ReEncoded Version is totally uncut and for the first time true widescreen.
This was personally encoded by me, Carjacker from the =Uncut Special Edition= DVD.
Leave your thoughts/opinions and ratings on the A/V of this film for others to see. Thanks!

Thanks for this classic !!!
Thank you!!!
Any chance for this on MP4...
I know the torrent has been here for a long time, but I still call bullshit on this being truly anamorphic. I will download anyway and test it out, then report back. As far as I know, this movie still suffers from not having a proper transfer and restoration. Until that happens, I just don't see how any release in the scene can be truly anamorphic. I guess I'll have to find out for myself....
I downloaded it and it is as I expected. It is the DVD with the black bars removed. The artifacts in the print and the quality of the video definitely tell me it is just the retail DVD with no 4:3 black bars. I commend the effort, but will wait for a proper restoration, which is actually in the works at the new 4K standard.
@ Nearsighted_Scrappile
There is no Abyss ( or True Lies) Blu ray at 4k transfer being released any time in the near (or far) future,at this moent. every year, we hear the same old rumor mills chugging out the same 'This is the Year!' crap, but nothing ever comes of it.
The upload I have here is the S.E. UNCUT R6 (Unofficial) version, never released any where else, where the original SFX producer worked with one of the masters to produce the film.

There was a falling out of sorts between Van Ling and Cameron over how to redo the film, with Cameron always claiming no time due to other projects, while Van Ling always said he was willing to rush to do a remaster,no matter the timing or schedule conflicts.

To say the following: " The artifacts in the print and the quality of the video definitely tell me it is just the retail DVD with no 4:3 black bars." is misleading to those who may come to download this - This is a RECODE, with almost 95%+ shots either in water, in the dark or in dark water, so,yeah, you will get pixellation and artifacts occurring because to have it at even 1.7GBs (of which i tried to keep as much quality as possible under the circumstances, hence the size) encode, you cant get the type of crystal clear video one wishes.
Maybe if I was to redcode this again, since it is 2 yrs+ since this was upped - and codecs and programs are changed, updated and better - I could get closer to a more 'likable' encode.
Ill see if i want to do that sometime in the future.
Good luck and have a nice day.

NOTE: Oh, and BTW, people, I know its DVD 480p, the 720p was a typo that was not corrected due to using a standardized NFO for uploading. So , plz, stop mentioning it.
Thank you!
